Overview
Guts (Japanese: ガッツ, Hepburn: Gattsu) is the protagonist of the manga Berserk, created by Kentaro Miura. He travels as a mercenary and later as the branded Black Swordsman (黒い剣士). The Dark Horse English edition of volume 1 introduces him in those terms: a feared warrior with a gigantic sword, an iron hand, and the Brand that draws the forces of darkness to him. The turbulent bond between Guts and Griffith, leader of the Band of the Hawk, is the series’ central relationship.
Background and origin
Born from his hanged mother and saved by the mercenary Gambino, Guts is raised by Gambino as an adoptive father and combat mentor. When Gambino later tries to murder him—blaming him in misplaced grief—Guts is forced to kill Gambino to survive. As a young fighter he attracts the Band of the Hawk after killing the knight Bazuso; Griffith defeats him in a duel and forces him into the company, claiming ownership of him.
Band of the Hawk and the Eclipse
With the Hawks, Guts fights through Midland’s Hundred-Year War, rises beside Griffith and Casca, and eventually leaves after defeating Griffith in a duel. When he returns to help free Griffith from imprisonment, Griffith sacrifices the Band to be reborn as Femto of the God Hand. During the Eclipse, Apostles slaughter the Hawks; Guts loses his left forearm and right eye trying to save Casca, who loses her sanity. The Skull Knight returns them to the physical world. Branded by the God Hand, Guts becomes a nightly target for demonic attacks and seeks revenge on Griffith while protecting what remains of Casca’s life.
Personality and development
Early Black Swordsman chapters present Guts as a ruthless anti-hero; the Golden Age arc shows how Hawks camaraderie, ambition, and betrayal formed him. Later journeys toward Elfhelm add companions such as Puck, Isidro, Farnese, Serpico, Schierke, and Ivalera, forcing him to balance vengeance with care for Casca and resistance to the “Beast of Darkness” impulse.
Equipment and combat
Guts’ oversized sword, the Dragon Slayer, was designed so its weight would feel like a fist bursting from the page—Miura cited Fist of the North Star’s striking power as a visual goal. The Dark Horse volume 1 description matches the published image: gigantic sword, iron hand, and Brand. After the Eclipse he fights with a prosthetic cannon arm. Flora later gives him the Berserker Armor, which multiplies power while risking loss of control to inner darkness; Skull Knight warns him not to abuse it.
Creation and series context
Miura sketched a dark warrior with a gigantic sword while assisting George Morikawa; that figure became Guts. Influences he discussed include Mad Max, Rutger Hauer performances, Dororo’s Hyakkimaru (prosthetic ideas), and friendships that informed Hawk camaraderie—especially his bond with fellow creator Kouji Mori as partial inspiration for Guts and Griffith.
Portrayals
Japanese voices include Nobutoshi Canna (1997 anime) and Hiroaki Iwanaga (films, 2016 anime). English voices include Marc Diraison (1997 anime/films) and Kaiji Tang (2016 anime). Guts appears as a playable character in games such as Sword of the Berserk: Guts’ Rage and Berserk: Millennium Falcon Hen Seima Senki no Shō.
