Kisuke Urahara’s Bankai is Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame — a range-limited ability that remakes whatever it contacts. It is first shown in the Thousand-Year Blood War manga during his fight with Sternritter Askin Nakk Le Vaar, and later adapted in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 42 (“Son of Darkness”).

Who is Kisuke Urahara?
Kisuke Urahara is a former Gotei 13 captain, founder of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute, and the eccentric shopkeeper who mentors Ichigo’s circle in the Human World. In the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, the Wandenreich treats him as one of the Five Special War Powers (also called special war potentials)—not primarily for raw destructive output, but for unpredictable “means”: inventions, contingencies, and battlefield problem-solving.
During the Deicide conflict, Sōsuke Aizen remarks that Urahara is the only being in Soul Society whose intellect surpasses his own. That is Aizen’s assessment in-scene, not an objective power ranking.
What is Benihime?
Benihime (“Crimson Princess”) is Urahara’s Zanpakutō. In Shikai, Benihime is the tool readers see for most of the series: crimson energy techniques, barriers, and precise mid-range control rather than a simple heavy blade style. Bankai does not discard that scientific temperament—it escalates it from “tool use” to full restructuring.
What is Urahara’s Bankai?
Urahara’s Bankai is named Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame (観音開紅姫改メ). When released, a giant feminine marionette-like figure associated with Benihime appears behind him. In the manga, Askin has no prior data on it when it appears—Urahara had kept the ability off the board for an extremely long time.
Earlier in the Arrancar arc, when Yasutora Sado asks for training against Bankai-level pressure, Urahara refuses to use his own release and has Renji train Chad instead, saying his Bankai is not fit for training or for lending power to others. After the Bankai’s later reveal, that line reads as practical risk management: a remaking ability is a poor sparring partner.
Separately, Yoruichi notes that Urahara achieved Bankai through a compressed training method in three days—the same approach later used to help Ichigo. That explains how quickly he attained Bankai; it is not the same question as why he rarely shows it.
What does Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame do?
Urahara states the core rule plainly in manga chapter 665 (“The Princess Dissection”): the Bankai remakes / restructures anything it comes into contact with, within its effective range.
Offensive restructuring
Against Askin, the Bankai opens flesh without a conventional sword-cut telegraphed as the only cause—Askin’s arm splits, then stitches shut when he leaves the effective area. Urahara treats this as anatomical remaking, not a flashy beam contest.
Self-repair and enhancement
After Askin’s Gift Ring destroys Urahara’s eyes, the Bankai’s marionette hands rebuild them. Urahara also restructures his own gripping hand mid-clash to keep fighting. The story presents these as temporary battlefield remakes inside the Bankai’s rules, not permanent biology edits that outlast the release.
Tactical restructuring of the field
Askin seals the fight inside Gift Ball Deluxe / Gift Bereich and claims escape is impossible. Urahara never accepts that premise: he carves a path through the field and brings Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez in to crush Askin’s heart. The Bankai’s value here is contingency engineering as much as direct damage.
Strengths and limitations shown on-page
- Range-bound: Askin notices the technique has a range; leaving the area ends the remake effect on him in the demonstration.
- Not a permanent fix: When the crisis ends and the Bankai is no longer sustaining the remake, Urahara’s repaired injuries do not simply stay “solved.” The story treats the restoration as time bought under Bankai, not an unconditional heal.
- Not an auto-win button: Even with Bankai active, Urahara still needs Grimmjow’s finishing strike and later help escaping Askin’s intensifying poison field after Askin’s death.
- Poor training tool: Consistent with his earlier refusal to spar Chad using Bankai.
When is it revealed?
Manga: The release begins at the end of chapter 664 (“The Gift”) and is demonstrated in chapter 665 (“The Princess Dissection”), with the Askin fight continuing in the following chapter pages.
Anime: Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 42 (“Son of Darkness”) adapts the reveal. Contemporary coverage notes viewers reacting to the Bankai’s direction, including anime-original fight staging around the sequence. Treat manga panels as the baseline for ability wording; treat the episode as the animated presentation of that fight.
How it compares with his Shikai
Shikai Benihime is Urahara’s everyday toolkit—energy, defense, and control without rewriting opponents’ bodies. Bankai keeps the same scientific identity but changes the grammar of the fight: instead of only projecting crimson techniques, Urahara remakes contact targets inside a limited theater. That is why the Askin battle flips from “poison immunity arms race” to “who controls the structure of the field.”
Context from the Askin fight (without spoiler padding)
Before Bankai, Yoruichi’s transformed Shunkō state pressures Askin because—per Urahara’s explanation—her Reiatsu in that form changes 48 times per second, disrupting simple immunity. Askin’s Quincy: Vollständig (Hasshein) is then presented as adapting to those surface changes when he can sample the pattern. Gift Ring destroys Urahara’s eyes; Bankai answers by remaking them and forcing Askin into a fight he would rather avoid. The killing blow is Grimmjow’s, prepared by Urahara’s path through the sealed field.
FAQ
Is Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame “the strongest” Bankai?
Canon does not rank it that way. It is a highly flexible restructuring ability with clear range and sustain limits. Calling it “broken” is fan shorthand, not a series verdict.
Does the Bankai permanently heal people?
The demonstrated eye remake is a Bankai-sustained restructuring. Do not read it as unconditional permanent regeneration once the release ends.
Manga or anime first?
The ability is established in the manga (chapters 664–665). The TYBW anime later visualizes the same confrontation in Episode 42, with some staging unique to the adaptation.
